MY FATHER HAD A FURNITURE STORE IN BEVERLY HILLS AND I WAS RAISED ON VETERAN AVE BETWEEN OLYMPIC AND PICO IN WEST LOS ANGELES.

1945 AT THE END OF WORLD WAR II MY FATHER TOOK THE FAMILY TO HOLLYWOOD BLVD, TO CELEBRATE

I WENT TO THE DIANAH SHORE RADIO SHOW WITH HER NIECE IN MY 1950 SUMMER CLASS AT UCLA, STUDYING BROADCASTING. ART LINKLETTER JUNIOR WAS IN MY SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS 1951. WHERE THE DOCTOR INSTRUCTOR PUT ART LINKLETTER JUNIOR IN A HEAD LOCK BECAUSE HE WAS CUTTING UP. ART LINKLETTER THE KING OF TV GAME SHOWS.

MY SISTER GRADUATED WITH ELIZABETH TAYLOR AT UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL IN 1951. I GRADUATED AT UNI IN 1955 WITH WITH ALLAN LADD JR. THAT PRODUCED BRAVE HEART AND HEADED UP FOX STUDIOS. HE NEVER SHOWING UP FOR REUNIONS. THERE IS THE 60TH REUNION IN OCTOBER THIS YEAR. I HOPE TO SEE HIM THERE AND WE CAN TALK ABOUT DOING A PROJECT TOGETHER.

THE FATHER OF A GIRL, FRIEND OF MINE WAS A BIG TIME PRODUCER, THAT HAD A FANCY HOUSE IN BRENTWOOD. SHE NOT QUITE UP TO MY STANDARD OF BEAUTY, BUT SHE HAD A CRUSH ON ME. SHE WENT OFF TO STANFORD AND I WENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON. SHE WAY TOO SMART FOR ME.

MY SUMMER JOB IN 1957 WAS PARKING CARS AT CHASSENS’ IN BEVERLY HILLS, IT WAS THE RESTAURANT FOR HOLLYWOOD. GRACHO MARKS, JOAN CRAWFORD, FRANK SINATRA, DEAN MARTIN, ALFORD HITCHCOCK, AND THE BIG GUY I DID NOT RECOGNIZE ROCK HUDSON. BUT THE HIGHLIGHT WAS THE GORGEOUS WOMAN IN THE EMERALD DRESS THAT RAISED HER HAND TO ME TO HELP HER OUT OUT OF GUY WINGED MERCEDES ROADSTER. THE DOORMAN INFORMING ME SHE WAS A HIGH PRICE HOOKER. SO I WAS AROUND THE MAIN CHARACTER OF HOLLYWOOD, BUT JUST A MEANS TO PARK THEIR CARS, ALTHOUGH I WAS IN ARCHITECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON AT THE TIME.

IN 1962 I MET BARON WOLMAN A PHOTOGRAPHER OUT OF CHIAGO, LIVING IN LOS ANGELES AND EAGER TO DO SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT. WE STARTED A BOOK ON LOS ANGELES ARCHITECTURE AND WENT AROUND LOS ANGELES SHOOTING BUILDINGS, AT THE SAME TIME I GOT INTERESTED IN POTTERY AND HE BACKED ME TO PRODUCE POTS. NEITHER PROJECT GOT OFF THE GROUND, BUT WE ARE STILL FRIENDS. BARRY BEING THE PHOTOGRAPHER FOR ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE AT WOODSTOCK. WE ENDED UP IN SAN FRANCISCO TOGETHER AND I DESIGNED AN INTERIOR FOR HIS OFFICE, WHICH DID NOT GET BUILT. WE WENT OUR SEPARATE WAYS AND HE STARTED A MAGAZINE RAGS AND DID NUMEROUS BOOKS ON HIS PHOTOS.

IN 1971 BARRY GOT ME AN INTERVIEW AT ROLLING STONE WHEN I WAS DOING THE BIOMORPHIC BIOSPERE, THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE ENDED UP DOING THE STORY WITH JUDY STONE THE DAUGHTER OF I F STONE . I PUSHING THE SCRIPT IN 1976 AND JUDY SAID TO GO TO FRANCIS COPPOLA, WHO WAS BUSY FILMING ” APOCALYPSE NOW”.

BARRY GOT BURNED ON A HOUSE HE BUILT WITH A ORGANIC DESIGNER IN THE WINE COUNTRY NORTH OF SAN FRANCISCO. IT HAD ISSUES AND BARRY ALMOST LOST HIS PILE OF MONEY. HE RECENTLY HELPED ME WITH THE PURCHASE OF JUMP START BIOMORPHIC OASIS LAND.

AFTER GRADUATING WITH A MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE FROM CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART IN DETROIT 1967, I VISITED NEW YORK WHERE I HAD A CONNECTION TO HUNTLEY AND BRINKLEY THE FAMOUS NBC NEWS TEAM. I KNEW THE DAUGHTER OF CHET HUNTLEY AND HER HUSBAND DAN ARNSMIER GOT ME AN INTERVIEW. NOTHING HAPPENED, BUT RECENTLY DAN REMEMBERING HOW IMPRESSED HE WAS WITH MY VERTICAL CITY SCHEME FOR DETROIT. JONNY CARSON TURNED ME DOWN AS WELL, NOT HIS SORT OF THING. I SHOWED THE VERTICAL CITY TO ARTHUR C. CLARK , AUTHOR OF “2001,” IN NEW YORK, AFTER HE GAVE A LECTURE TO THE AIA. ROLLING THE HUGE DRAWINGS OUT ON THE CARPET OF THE CONVENTION HALL. HE STARED, SMILED AND WALKED OFF.

MY FIRST WIFE JOANNE AND I BOUGHT A SMALL GUEST HOUSE ON MULHOLLAND DRIVE AND OUR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WAS JOHN VERNON, AN ACTOR OF SOME NOTE. A SHAKESPEARIAN ACTOR FROM CANADA MAKING MONEY IN HOLLYWOOD. A RICHARD BURTON TYPE THAT DRANK AND PROJECTED HIS VOICE IN DRAMATIC FASHION. HE BEING IN EASTWOOD MOVIES AND THE COLLEGE PRESIDENT IN ANIMAL HOUSE. I DID A REMODEL PROPOSAL FOR HIM WHICH HE NEVER PAID ME A DIME FOR. MY SCHEME MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT HE BUILT. IN 1970 DAVID GREENBERG OF ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATIONS, APPROACHED ME IN VENICE TO DO A MOVIE ON THE VERTICAL CITY. I WANTED A SERIOUS MOVIE MADE. DAVID HAD NO TRACK RECORD OF MAKING MOVIES AT THAT TIME, SO I SAID NO. BIG MISTAKE BECAUSE DAVID HAD MONEY AND CONNECTIONS TO HOLLYWOOD. HIS PARTNER, ROGER WILSON’S, FATHER WAS A BIG TIME HOLLYWOOD MUSIC MAN. I WAS IN TRANSITION BETWEEN THE VERTICAL CITY FOR DETROIT AND BIOMORPHIC BIOSPHERE FOR LOS ANGELES. BY 1972 I WAS READY, BUT DID NOT APPROACH DAVID, HE HAD MOVED ON. IN RETROSPECT I WAS NOT READY FOR A MOVIE AT THAT TIME, BUT SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR IT.

I HAD A CONNECTION OF JULIE GALLAS BY WAY OF JENNIER, A SECRETARY AT A.T. WILKES AND STEINBECK, JULIE A MEGA RICH WOMAN FROM PITTSBURGH. SHE DATED THE LONGSHOREMAN FATHER OF MICHAEL PHILLIPS OF THE MAMAS AND THE PAPPAS SINGING GROUP. THE HOT BLOND IN THE GROUP. I CONNECTED TO THE LONGSHOREMAN FATHER. JULIE COULD HAVE SET ME UP FOR LIFE WORKING ON MY IDEAL STUFF. INSTEAD SHE GOT TICKED OFF AT ME FOR SAYING I COULD HAVE DONE HER KITCHEN REMODEL BETTER THAN JENNIER’S SON. SHE LINED ME UP WITH A CIGAR SMOKING FRIEND OF HERS THAT WAS MUCH TOO SOPHISTICATED FOR ME. JULIE HAD A VERY LARGE HOUSE WHERE I WOULD TAKE MY KIDS TO HANG OUT ON A SUNDAY. SHE HAVING A DAUGHTER THAT ENJOYED MY KIDS. JULIE HAVING A TRAGIC TIME WHEN TWO OF HER TEENAGE HIPPIE KIDS WERE KILLED ON THE SAME DAY. AROUND 1973, SHORTLY AFTER SCI-ARC STARTED, I HAD AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER CORMAN AND HIS WIFE JULIE (OF B MOVIE FAME) LIKE “MACHINE GUN KELLEY ” IN THEIR OFFICE ON SUNSET BLVD. ABOUT DOING A MOVIE ON THE BIOMORPHIC BIOSPHERE. THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED IN THE BIOMORPHIC BIOSPHERE, BUT ASKED ME TO BE THE ART DIRECTOR FOR DEATH RATE 2000. WHICH BECAME A CULT CLASSIC. I TURNED IT DOWN BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A SERIOUS EFFORT TO BETTER THE PLANET. THE STORY OF A CAR RACE FROM NEW YORK TO LOS ANGELES BASED ON SPEED AND HOW MANY PEDESTRIANS YOU COULD RUN OVER. ROGER WAS PROUD OF THE FACT IT WAS HIS IDEA TO RUN OVER PEDESTRIANS.

OUR BUDGET WAS TIGHT, BUT RALPH MADE THE MOST OF WHAT HE HAD. A CREATIVE GUY. OUR SOUND MAN MORT NEKRUG. IT HAD A FEW SHOWINGS, ONE WHERE PETER COOK SAW IT. LUCIA USED PARTS OF IT IN HER MOVIE. THE AUDIENCE LOVED RALPH’S SHOTS. ESPECIALLY ME GOING INTO A TUNNEL AND FLYING INTO THE HEAVENS IN MY SILVER CARMEN GHIA CONVERTIBLE.

AFTER CLASS WE WENT OFF TO SEE INDIANA JONES. I SPENT TIME AT HIS HOUSE. HE WAS SMART AND RELATED TO MY WORK. NOTHING CAME OF IT. TODD WAS SKILLED AND LEARNED FAST, AND INITIALLY DID WELL. WE WERE DOING TWO HOUSES A WEEK. THE CLASS WAS DEMANDING AND TODD BROUGHT IN A MODEL OF QUESTIONABLE MERIT. HE ASKED ME WHAT I THOUGHT? I SAID IT WAS NOT UP TO STANDARD. HE TOOK OUT HIS WALLET AND THREW A HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL ON IT. HE ASKED WHAT DID I THINK NOW? I TOLD HIM IT DIDN’T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. HE KEPT THROWING $100 BILLS UNTIL IT REACHED A THOUSAND. SOME KIDS WERE POOR IN THE CLASS AND LIVING UNDER THEIR DRAFTING BOARDS. IT WAS A SURREAL ACT. FUNNY IN SOME WAYS, BUT A TRAGEDY .

HE AND HIS BUDDY OF THE ITALIAN FIAT FAMILY SPENT GOBS OF MONEY IN MY NATURAL STUDIES CLASS. THE LAST ASSIGNMENT BEING A KINETIC PROJECT. THEY TOOK A MOTOR HOME MODEL ABOUT 16″ LONG AND 8″ INCHES HIGH AND HAD THE CLASS COME OUT TO THE PARKING LOT. THEY DROVE IT AROUND WITH REMOTE CONTROL AND THEN THE TOP OPENED UP AND A ROCKET POINTED UPWARD THAT WAS BLASTED SKYWARD A THOUSAND FEET. NOW THAT IS HOLLYWOOD.

YEARS LATER IN 1995 GREG DAVIS THAT HAD BEEN A STUDENT OF MINE AT SCI-ARC THOUGHT WE SHOULD APPROACH HOLLYWOOD WITH THE SCRIPT AGAIN. SUGGESTING WE REWRITE IT IN TREATMENT FORM. WE GOT AN INTERVIEW AT DREAM WORKS AND WE PITCHED THE BIOMORPHIC BIOSPHERE SCRIPT. THE REACTION WAS THAT IT SHOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY AND NOT A DRAMA.       TALK ABOUT A FILM UNDERFINANCED, BUT STILL CREATIVE, THAT WAS THE ONE. AND LUCIA TOOK PARTS OF IT AND INSERTED IT IN HER FILM, MY FATHER THE GENIUS. I WILL UPDATE THIS BLOG AND INCLUDE YOUR FILM.

  1. I am afraid I have a low opinion of Hollywood. It seems to be all about power, big business, and satisfying the whims of the mass market. I can think of no group less likely to take a real interest in your work, Glen. You need support from thinkers, not artificers.

    However, within the ranks of the Hollywood power elite there are sure to be imaginative, creative and responsible folks who would understand what you’re trying to do. Perhaps it’s about separating the Hollywoodies from Hollywood?

      I JUST HOPE A LOT, AND AS YOU POINT OUT HOLLYWOOD PRODUCES VERY LITTLE OF CONSEQUENCE. ESPECIALLY IF ANY ORGINALITY IS REQUIRED.

      THE SOCIETY HAS NO WAY OF KNOWING ALTERNATIVES TO THE PRESENT MIND SET OF DEVELOPMENT. HOW SAD.
