FRONT DOOR AND WINDOW SLOTS FROM THE STREET, NELSON REMODEL 1990
GLEN HOWARD SMALL AND MICHAEL RENDLER ARCHITECTS. THE NELSONS ARE THE BARBIE DOLL PROFESSIONAL COUPLE. BOTH WORK OUT, AND THE EPITOME OF GOOD LOOKS. THEY STUMBLED ONTO MY GRANT WADA CONDOS WHILE DRIVING AROUND IN SANTA MONICA, SOUTH OF PICO, IN 1987 AND THEY LUCKED OUT, BECAUSE THE CONDOS HAD SOLD OUT AND ONE FELL OUT OF ESCROW, SO THEY BOUGHT . THE NEXT THING I KNEW THREE YEARS LATER, THEY PURCHASED A DUMPY HOUSE A FEW BLOCKS AWAY AND WANTED TO REMODEL IT TO RAISE THEIR EXPANDING FAMILY.

in the still of the night on july 21 2013 the fountain was torn down. no prior notice given. the government had not maintained the fountain for eight years and everything that could be stolen or broken was enacted. a programed neglect to destroy, marked for death, since many rotundas have been restored by the present government. IN THE BEGINNING IN 1976 THERE WAS A VISION OF DR. DAVID LEVINE FOR A RECOVERY ROOM ON THE CORNER OF LA CIENGA BLVD. NEAR THE SANTA MONICA FREEWAY IN L.A. THE GOOD DOCTOR AND FAMILY LIVED IN A HOUSE OF MINE IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS. IT WAS THE AGE OF AQUARIUS TO BE COLORFUL AND HIP. MY JOB WAS TO REMODEL A COMMERCIAL SHELL TO SERVE ICE CREAM. NO MAJOR CHANGES, JUST MANIPULATE THE EXISTING BUILDING.

WHAT HAPPENED? A PROJECT THAT WAS UPBEAT IN NATURE, HAD THE SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY, AND POLITICAL BACKING. WHAT WENT WRONG? THE TIMES CHANGED. THE DAY THAT PROPOSITION 13 PASSED IN CALIFORNIA, A MANDATE THAT THE PUBLIC WANTED TO LOWER TAXES, PAT RUSSEL , THE COUNCILWOMAN WHO BACKED THE PROJECT, WAS SET IN FRONT OF THE GREEN MACHINE MODEL ON TV AND WAS ASKED EMBARRASSING QUESTIONS OF SPENDING PUBLIC MONEY FOR EXPERIMENTS OF THIS NATURE. IT WAS AN UPBEAT TIME FOR ME. I TOOK A TEACHING SABBATICAL FROM SCI-ARC IN THE SPRING OF 1980, AND POURED MY HEART INTO THE PROJECT. AT THE SAME TIME I HAD PURCHASED A NEW STRIPPED GM MOTOR HOME AND PUT MY OFFICE IN IT. THE IDEA WAS TO BE MOBILE. THAT WAS A GREAT IDEAL BUT DIFFICULT TO IMPLEMENT, BECAUSE I WAS INTO TECHNOLOGY WITH CARPENTERS SKILLS. Continue reading
